The Byway

There is 49,000 miles of footpaths unrecorded in Britain, the majority being in the South West. After the government cut-off date of January 2026, it will no longer be possible to add paths to the definitive map, meaning the right to access them will not be protected for the future.

Research shows that the ability to access nature and green space close to where people live is more important than ever.

The images depict how even the most inconspicuous of byways can create a sense of transition through the shifting seasons. Each image is taken at day break on the 1st of the month. There is something enticing in the knowledge that the weather, light and agricultural landscape will change each walk into an entirely different experience.
